Tariffs, Reality, and the Real Bill Americans Are Paying

What the New Study Found

President Trump has repeatedly claimed foreign countries pay for his tariffs, not Americans. But new research suggests the opposite is largely true.

Economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and Columbia University found that through November 2025, about 90% of the economic burden of Trump’s tariffs fell on U.S. companies and consumers.

Even more striking: in the first eight months of 2025, the researchers estimate 94% of tariff costs were borne inside the United States.

The tariffs may have been aimed overseas, but according to the data, Americans are still paying most of the bill.

It’s Washington’s Birthday. And Lincoln’s And Five Other Guys Born in February. Ok, All of Them.

Every February, Americans get a long weekend… and the same question comes back: Wait, whose birthday is this again?

The answer is surprisingly complicated.

It Started as Washington’s Birthday

The federal holiday was created to honor George Washington, born February 22, 1732. Even today, the official federal name is still Washington’s Birthday.

In 1971, Congress moved several holidays to Mondays to create more three-day weekends. That shifted Washington’s Birthday to the third Monday in February—which means the holiday never actually lands on Washington’s real birthday.

Where “Presidents’ Day” Comes From

The nickname stuck because Abraham Lincoln—born February 12, 1809—also has a February birthday.

Over time, many Americans began treating the holiday as a shared celebration of Washington + Lincoln, and eventually a broader tribute to all U.S. presidents.
