Kristi Noem Ousted as DHS Secretary After Months of Controversy
The political storm surrounding Kristi Noem reached a breaking point this week after President Donald Trump removed her from her role as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
Noem’s tenure had been under intense scrutiny for months. The most explosive controversy involved two fatal immigration enforcement incidents in Minneapolis earlier this year. Federal agents shot and killed Renée Good and Alex Pretti, both U.S. citizens, during separate operations — sparking nationwide protests and heated congressional hearings.
Lawmakers from both parties pressed Noem about the incidents and criticized her decision to initially describe the events as acts tied to “domestic terrorism.”
At the same time, questions were mounting about a $220 million DHS advertising contract that critics said benefited a firm linked to Noem’s political circle. Lawmakers also raised concerns about reports of a personal relationship between Noem and senior adviser Corey Lewandowski.
This week the White House announced that Senator Markwayne Mullin would be nominated to replace her as head of DHS.
Noem isn’t leaving government entirely. Officials say she will transition into a new diplomatic role tied to a regional security initiative.
But her departure leaves behind a Department of Homeland Security facing continued scrutiny over immigration enforcement and leadership — debates that are likely far from over.
