Bill Cosby Hit With $19.2M Verdict in Decades-Old Sexual Assault Case
A California jury has ordered Bill Cosby to pay $19.2 million to a woman who says he drugged and sexually assaulted her in 1972—more than 50 years ago.
The plaintiff, now in her 80s, testified that Cosby gave her wine and a pill she believed was aspirin before she lost consciousness and later awoke partially undressed. Jurors ultimately found him liable for sexual battery, awarding millions in damages for the lasting impact.
The case was made possible by changes in California law that temporarily lifted the statute of limitations for older sexual assault claims—opening the door for survivors to come forward decades later.
Cosby, once known as “America’s Dad,” has been accused by more than 60 women of similar misconduct. While his 2018 criminal conviction was later overturned on procedural grounds, civil cases like this one continue to reshape his legacy.
His legal team says an appeal is coming. But for many, this verdict represents something larger: a rare measure of accountability, even after half a century.
